Abstract: Spur gear wears out either owing to rubbing action between the meshed gears or by foreign elements like dust particles, metal debris, etc., which reduce its efficiency and service life. In this paper, reverse engineering approach has been proposed as a wear prediction methodology for spur gear. The gear has been scanned before and after wear using PICZA 3D laser scanner (Roland LPX60). The scanned data was obtained in the form of point cloud data, which was then pre-processed to remove the scanned noise. The data obtained in such a way is used to produce the surface geometry of gear tooth before and after wear and then they are compared to determine the wear-out volume. It may be used to determine the remaining service life of worn-out gear.
