Abstract: The aim of this paper is to explore the barriers and critical success factors that affect the research and development (R&D) performance in Indian manufacturing firms. Past works help in identifying major factors for R&D practices and their relationships. A questionnaire survey among 262 R&D personnel of 38 manufacturing firms and an analysis of the response by factor analysis, principal component analysis, and structural equation modelling revealed that R&D management strategy and market focus are the most significant enabling factors for the R&D practices in Indian manufacturing firms.
