Abstract: A review of iron oxides and their importance as pigments in respect of spray-roasting technology is given here. The paper gives a classification of iron oxy compounds in general, by an outline of their crystallography. A market review on production statistics, uses, prices and major applications is detailed in this paper. Their major importance on hydrochloric acid spray-roast technology as a beneficial income by upgrading the iron oxide coming from this technology towards pigment grades thus helping to reduce costs.

Keywords: iron oxides; classification; pigment classes; pigment colourings; hydrochloric acid; spray roasting; crystallography; production statistics.
