Abstract: The objective of this paper is to analyse the impact of joining the Madrid System on the number of trademark applications and the level of international trade of signatory countries. The Madrid System is an international treaty that allows a trademark owner to seek registration in any of the countries that have joined the Madrid System by filing a single application. The analysis of the number of trademark applications of selected countries suggests that the share of foreign applications via the Madrid System to total foreign applications increases to a limiting percentage three to five years after joining the Madrid System and then remains relatively stable. The paper also finds that joining the Madrid System has a positive impact on the imports of signatory countries.
