Abstract: Sliding mode control (SMC) idea has steadily remained a busy research area for more than half a century. Its market penetration in industrial products is, however, below expected line. A control idea, for its mass market penetration needs to meet, apart from control objective, multi-objective criteria ranging from its simple implementation procedure, meeting energy efficiency, cost, weight, etc. Control is inherently required in power electronics domain for control and actuation purposes to translate a particular control idea to achieve desired goal effectively. To achieve such goal, evolution in SMC has remained mostly one-dimensional - to eliminate chattering. In that process it increasingly generates complex control algorithm for power electronics to handle; whereas evolution in power electronics is searching for overall product optimisation. This article practically analyses the maturity model of SMC for its acceptability in power electronics domain.
