Abstract: An automated crack sealing machine (ACSM) prototype has been developed to in order to: 1) minimise the exposure of workers to the dangers associated with working on a major highway; 2) considerably increase the speed of the operation; and 3) improve the quality and consistency of the resultant seal. Increasing the speed of the operation will in turn reduce the accompanying traffic congestion since lane closure times will decrease. Reduced traffic congestion alleviates numerous accompanying problems including air pollution, fossil fuel depletion, and loss of productivity. In order to satisfactorily seal cracks, the ACSM performs the following functions automatically: senses the occurrence and location of cracks in pavement; adequately prepares the pavement surface; prepares and dispenses the sealant; forms the sealant into the desired configuration. This paper describes the integrated vehicle system for automated crack sealing. This includes description of the ACSM architecture, support vehicle, system components, operation and performance specifications.
