Abstract: Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become prominent technology, widely adopted in diverse domains. Their online availability through the web and internet technologies has reinforced that. On the other hand, Open Source platforms provide all the instruments necessary to build-up a web solution for a GIS that can be completely used interactively. In this paper, we will introduce the concept of online GIS and the available solutions, especially those which are open source. For the 'Static Map' solution, we propose a new organisation of images, based on the spatial indexes. In order to speed-up the search and to optimise the images' retrieval, we propose a modification of the research algorithm using a proposed selection criterion and navigation modes. Finally, we implemented the organisation through the development of a tourist sites' online GIS of the west region of Algiers, Algeria.
