Abstract: In EDM process, orbital tool movement helps to decouple the size of tool electrode from the desired size of cavity. The orbital motion, with its adjustable radius, allows a range of hole sizes to be drilled with a single tool electrode. In present study, experimental investigation is carried out to study the effect of orbital parameters along with machine parameters on two response characteristics viz. material removal rate (MRR) and tool wear rate (TWR). The Taguchi experimental design is applied to find out the optimal combination of process parameters to maximise the material removal rate as well as minimise tool wear. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is performed and signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio is determined to know the level of significance of the process parameters. Based on ANOVA, it is found that orbital radius has significant effect on MRR while it does not have any adverse effect on TWR The results have been confirmed experimentally at 95% confidence level.
