Abstract: This paper analyses Microsoft's strategies in managing operating system innovations, based on the innovation life cycle model. This study develops a methodological framework of platform for analysing the process of platform creation (the capability to engender an increasing future and continuing success of new innovations or businesses). The results reveal that Microsoft gains competitive advantage by consistently improving its technology platform and business platform to exploit the innovation. This study offers important lessons in strategic innovation management.
