Abstract: Cooperative learning has been around for a long time. However the use of computers to support such activity is fairly new. In this paper, we present our work within the SHIECC [1] project concerned with the design and implementation of an effective cooperative learning system applied to courses in engineering. The proposed system is an agent-based software package offering new opportunities in education by integrating cooperative learning with computers, multimedia and network technologies. We focus here on the conceptual model of the system. We present our agent-based architecture, a study on the cooperative learning strategies and our proposal for modelling cooperation between the related heterogeneous agents (humans and software) presenting different roles and characteristics.

Keywords: computer supported cooperative learning; agent-based modelling; cooperative learning strategies; human-agent interaction.
