Abstract: Firstly, the conceptual framework is described. This is the set of ideas and design approaches which it is believed to be fundamental to designing for sustainability in the built environment, and which will structure the value system for carrying out the research. Then, a second part will follow, which concerns an analytic presentation of a small part of the project: the use of supervisory control of an intelligent building using EIB-KONNEX technology. This part of the paper describes the design and control methods for many aspects of energy consumption in a building, mainly lighting and heating/cooling.

Keywords: supervisory control; energy management; intelligent buildings; EIB-KONNEX technology; heat pumps; investment pay-back period; holistic approach; ecology; architecture; built environment; sustainable design; sustainable development; design for sustainability; lighting; heating; cooling.
