Abstract: Most highway maintenance and construction operations require a separation between the designated work zone and the lanes open to fast moving traffic. Traffic cones are typically used as the separator, and these cones are manually deployed. This paper reports on an automated machine for placing and retrieving traffic cones, which greatly improves the safety of the operation and is operable by a single worker. The integrated vehicle system is described including its architecture, support vehicle, system components, operation and system specifications.
Keywords: automated cone placement; cone placement; cone retrieval; highway cones.
