Abstract: Forging processes are accompanied by large plastic deformations and residual stresses. Depending on the local cooling rate the deformed material typically is in the stable or the supercooled austenitic state. The results show that plastic deformation of the stable austenite does not accelerate the kinetics of the isothermal bainitic phase transformation whereas a pre-deformation of the supercooled austenite results in a pronounced acceleration of the phase transformation. In addition, deformation of austenite in its supercooled state leads to transformation plasticity whereas no transformation plasticity was observed after pre-straining of the stable austenite.
