Abstract: The paper presents the e-competence strategies at the University of Duisburg-Essen and explains which factors are crucial for their success. It reports on the E-Competence Agency and its concept of demand-driven face-to-face consulting to win lecturers to e-learning and other e-services provided by the central service units, the role of the strategic learning platform Moodle, e-learning in the broader context of the development of seamlessly integrated digital support for the value-chain of the University and the key factors of success for e-competence. In its concluding part, the paper presents an outlook on present and future challenges for e-competence such as the changing understanding of e-learning as a |natural dimension| of teaching and learning, and of e-competence in the overall IT strategy of the University.
