Abstract: The development of failure assessment programs for personal computers is a logical step on the way from fracture theory to its applications. As an example of such programs, the program IWM-VERB3 is briefly described. This program is based on linear elastic and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, and it enables the assessment of critical loads, critical defect sizes, fatigue crack growth and lifetime for simple models of components with defects. In the ductile failure calculations CEGB R6 Routine and GEIEPRI Engineering Approach are used. Some examples of applications are shown.

Keywords: personal computers; failure assessment programs; damage theory; damage mechanics; fatigue crack growth; damage protection engineering; structural failure; fracture mechanics; critical loads; critical defect sizes.
