Abstract: This paper is concerned with the use of plastics as engineering materials. Examples are presented of the use of plastics by mechanical, civil, design and product engineers in applications where high performance is required and long-term performance must be predicted. The properties of plastics are very different from most traditional materials, and this has implications for engineers in their approach to applying these materials.

Keywords: engineering design; engineering plastics; plastics manufacture; material properties; molecular structure; engineering materials.
