Abstract: Double-annealed alpha + beta titanium alloy TC9 has been employed to study the statistical distribution of fatigue crack initiation life. Low-cycle fatigue data and P-S-N curves as well as cyclic stress-strain relations serve as a basis for the calculation of fatigue initiation lives by means of a local strain procedure. The results calculated are in good agreement with experimental results, which were determined from notched three-point bending specimens by infrared technique to monitor the appearance of 0.10 to 0.12 mm long fatigue cracks. The fatigue initiation life data were then fitted to a log-normal distribution and conclusions were drawn on the basis of the |weakest link| model.
