Abstract: On the basis of experimental investigations in continuous casting, Wolf (1980a) has suggested a simplified relationship between the heat flux measurements and shell growth as s ∼ 0.155 H00.5. Considering a cyclic function of temperature predominant in mould wall thickness less than 10 mm owing to boiling hysteresis, the relationship derived in the present work is s = 0.1582 H00.5 which is in good agreement with Wolf|s results.

Keywords: continuous casting; heat flux; casting moulds; shell growth; solidification; mould wall thickness.
