Abstract: For the construction of an expert system on copper casting defects, currently used catalogues on copper casting alloys were examined. Systematic rules were obtained by the new classifying method proposed. The main results were as follows: the proposed classifying method can be efficient to sort out currently recognised defects; by using this method, computers can create rules for constructing innovative casting defects database; the currently used catalogues on casting defects are partly insufficient and in some cases seem to be illogical; more data based on scientific evaluation should be collected for further development.
