Title: Report on International Conference on Healthcare and Food: Challenges of Intellectual Property Rights, Biosafety and Bioethics

Abstract: Approximately 150 participants attended the conference including representatives from different countries from the developing world, and also from the developed world, who are sensitive to issues for developing countries in the area of interest of the conference Participants included people from academia (biotechnology research, science and technology policy research), government departments, industry, non-governmental organisations, lawyers, students from universities and approximately 20 people from the media. The conference format was a presentation of views and studies by identified scholars from different countries and India, followed by a panel of discussants for each theme, who commented on the presentations and also expressed their views and points. After this there was an open discussion, the idea being to involve most of the people present who wanted to contribute to and thereby enrich the discussion. The conference was inaugurated on 1 December, 2002. This paper presents highlights from the conference.
