Abstract: The US Department of Energy (DOE) takes an active interest and supports research on steel production; one of DOE|S goal is to modernize steel production in the US. Consequently, in a workshop sponsored by the US DOE, the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Steel Manufacturers Association, a group of experts from industry, academia and research institutions came together in May 1993 to identify long-term research opportunities in the industry with a particular focus on the use of computerization in steel manufacture. The conclusions of the workshop presented here may assist researchers and policy makers.
