Title: A new statistical approach for determining the optimal cutting time of tools in machining

Abstract: High production rates at low unit cost requires high efficiency in the manufacturing operations. One step towards the realisation of this goal is to use one tool for many cutting operations without changing to reduce the cost of the down time. The main goal of this research is to work out a strategy which makes possible to use cutting tool with minimum cost. The cost of cutting process is found based on knowledge of tool deterioration probability density and knowledge of production cost. The global cost function is governed by deterministic as well as stochastic terms. The deterministic terms are more dominated when the time of using cutting tool is small. However, as this time is increasing the effect of these terms is reduced and the cost function is mainly governed by the stochastic terms. The researchers hope that this contribution will be useful in cutting process optimisation.
