Abstract: Laser cladding and the recently developed laser casting technique are similar in their physical mechanisms. A transition from cladding to casting and vice versa can be achieved by proper control of the process parameters, both for preplaced and blown powder. In the present work, the preplaced powder technique is studied at a fundamental level. Its physical nature is responsible for a large operating window of dilution free cladding on the one hand and bond free casting on the other.

Keywords: laser cladding; laser casting; preplaced powder; powder grains; modelling; process parameters; dilution free cladding; bond free casting.
