Abstract: In recent years, a growing amount of attention has been paid to regional policies for promoting innovation. The strategic value of innovation and the importance of the territorial context in its generation are elements that make it an area of interest to researchers. Coordination of supporting organisations to promote innovation (any public or private organisation involved) is a relevant part in regional innovation policies. In this study, the process of innovation is taken as the basis on which to analyse the organisational framework supporting innovation policies by means of two illustrative examples, namely, the case of the Oresund Region in northern Europe and Veneto in Italy. The description of these cases has provided interesting suggestions and lessons, such as the need for an explicit regional innovation strategy, the role played by the supporting organisations, the market introduction of innovations and the role of a culture of innovation.
