Abstract: In the aim to deal with how to construct intelligent information system of an assembly line in a network-based collaborative manufacturing environment, we present firstly the basic functions which includes: to make electronic cards for assembly process, to control quality online, to record history data and to communicate with remote database management system. A network-based architecture of an assembly information system, the Unified Modelling Language (UML) is used to model the information system of an intelligent assembly line. Use case diagram, class diagram, states diagram, sequence diagram, interaction diagram and activity diagram have been constructed for an information system of an assembly line. The UML models can be used to indicate to designers and engineers of the information system how to work efficiently, and to make operators use the information system easily. The modelling method is applied to a real assembly line of an automotive transmission company in China.
