Abstract: Nowadays, the notion that the advancement of science and that of technology are fundamental for cultural, social and economic progress has become incontestable. The growing awareness of this has led to a markedly increased interest in empirical studies about technological and scientific development and to the proposal and testing of new quantitative indicators of research and innovation.
