Abstract: Reed valves are often modelled as lumped systems or by means of simplified continuous models or by finite element method (FEM). In this work, a comparison between some of these models is described pointing out advantages of each method in terms of accuracy and calculation resources demand. An original FEM simulation tool which reproduces reed dynamics with the presence of both the stop and base plate was developed. Contact non-linearity is introduced by means of a penalty load which is proportional to reed penetration in the guides. A practical study was also conducted obtaining a good adherence to experimental data.
