Abstract: Grinding is a widely practiced operation. The present study brings in an important aspect of what happens when the fines generated during dressing of the grinding wheel stay back in the coolant system. The results show that when the abrasive fines go beyond a concentration, the grinding wheel performance drastically deteriorates. In the absence of this knowledge, the performance drop will be attributed either to inconsistency in the grinding wheel or the non-performance of the coolant. This study clears the reason for unexplainable sudden drop in performance encountered in shop floor grinding.
