Abstract: This paper describes a methodological approach for the optimisation of the Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) gear shifting strategy in parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs). The novelty of this approach is the development of a driving cycle to take the influence of traffic conditions into account in the process of optimisation. This approach provides the necessary results to investigate the influence of driving condition on optimised shifting strategy. In this study, the optimisation problem is formulated using a Genetic Algorithm (GA) based on the minimisation of vehicle Fuel Consumption (FC) and emissions while maintaining drivability conditions. The results obtained from simulation study show the effectiveness of the approach, resulting in a considerable reduction in fuel use and emissions. The optimisation is much more effective in congested driving condition where frequent gear shifting is necessary.
