Abstract: Workers must be trained for skilled performance at a manufacturing process to make a product skillfully. The exact setup operations before machining especially influence the machining quality. Setup operations involve the setting of workpieces on a pallet with jigs and fixtures. Such operations depend heavily on skilled workers| experience. Appropriate skill strategies are crucial for efficient setup operations. This paper describes the methodology of planning for skill acquisition and a skill strategy for enhancing unskilled workers| capabilities of setup operations at a machining centre. Moreover, a skill strategy for the setup operation is developed using an actual situation.
