Abstract: This paper focuses on the need for standardised calibration procedures for automated non-invasive measurement of blood pressure. A critical overview of the existing standards and protocols dealing with the calibration of these devices is provided highlighting the need for a univocal definition of their performance and accuracy, together with objective test methods. This is an expanded version of a paper presented at the 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Medical Measurements and Applications, 9–10 May 2008, Ottawa, ON, Canada.

Keywords: blood pressure measurement; non-invasive measurement; calibration; standardisation; IEC; BHS; ANSI/AAMI; blood pressure monitoring.
