Title: Treatment of winery wastewater by UV-A radiation

Abstract: Winery wastewater typically has a pH of 3-4, with COD (chemical oxygen demand) of 800-12800 mg/L, and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) 1500-6000 mg/L depending on the vintage cycle. To date, there has been no general agreement on the most suitable method for the treatment of winery wastewater. On the other hand, Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) based on various techniques offer a promising alternative method for its treatment. The principal mechanism of AOPs function is the production of highly reactive free radicals. Ultraviolet (UV)-A radiation as one of the UV-driven AOPs was applied in the present work. The photodegradation of winery wastewater was studied by using UV-A radiation at different initial solution pH values using different number of UV lamps. The highest conversion of the pollutants removal was found under alkaline conditions. The average reaction rate increases with increasing number of lamps.
