Abstract: Apart from the university sector, education in the United Kingdom is devolved to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This paper relates to England, where the Department of Education and Science (DES) makes national policy and controls overall spending and local education authorities own and manage the schools and colleges. The paper outlines the way in which the DES and its partners are seeking to prepare young people for a world increasingly dependant upon technology, and in particular information technology. Topics dealt with are: educational links with industry, school curriculum and examinations, information technology.
