Abstract: Telecommunications is based on three underpinning technologies: microelectronics, optics, and software technology. The author argues that, whereas in the past microelectronics has been the driving force of innovation in telecommunications. Today it is the other way round. The paper reviews those developments in the three underpinning technologies that are likely to lead to advances in telecommunications.
