Abstract: In automotive engineering, the attainment of |superb quality| as perceived by the customer is the only assurance of market acceptability and competitiveness. Traditional design methodologies have been demonstrated as inadequate and incapable of meeting customer needs and expectations. This paper describes how Austin Rover Group has implemented organizational, managerial and operational changes to bring about an alternative design logic. Although the transition was broadly successful, different areas showed different rates of progress. A preliminary quantification of the benefits is presented.
