Abstract: Global changes in the fields of science and technology are placing ever-increasing demands on corporations, obliging them to look to the diversified uses of existing technologies or alternatively to develop new technologies as a means of holding their own in the market of the future, in spite of growing cost and competitive pressures. The three traditional competitive factors, namely market orientation, behaviour of competitors, and costs, are supplemented by the addition of a fourth element, technological competence. This change calls for a corporate culture that is both market- and technology-oriented, and also for organizational structures that ensure the availability and rapid deployment of new technologies in both products and processes.
