Abstract: The demand for Japanese iron and steel is determined by the state of the national and global economies, the changing mix of end-products, and the competitiveness of the steel producers. The author takes an overview of the state of the Japanese steelmaking industry, in terms of technological development and product development, presenting data on the trends in the 1970s and 1980s.
