Abstract: The potentials of science and technology are not used to their full effect in our societies. Changes in society and in technology create a gap between technological opportunities and societal needs. The introduction of technology assessment in technology policy in public as well as in private organizations can contribute to bridging this gap. This paper analyses the potential roles of technology assessment in the context of technology policy. It ends with some observations on the state of the art of technology assessment (TA) in Europe.

Keywords: technology assessment; technology policy; information society; innovation; technology management; Europe.
