Abstract: The role of orientation effects on gas sensing properties of nanocrystalline tin oxide sensors has been analysed on the basis of microscopic studies of grain habit and ab initio calculations of gas-surface interactions. The wide possibilities of structural engineering in optimisation of tin oxide sensing properties have been demonstrated.

Keywords: ab initio calculations; adsorption; carbon monoxide; grain habit; nanocrystalline stannic dioxide films; oxygen; reaction paths.
