Abstract: This paper recommends four measures to solve the problems existing in the traditional innovation life cycle, i.e., the Abernathy-Utterback (A-U) model. Based on a thorough examination on the linkage between innovation types and innovation dynamics, this study finds that the usefulness of the A-U model is discounted by its exclusion, oversimplification and insufficient sorting function. To overcome these limitations and develop a more accommodating innovation life cycle, it is necessary to select a broader common denominator, identify a set of innovation-binding forces, differentiate the life curves of key innovation components and label more turning points in an innovation life cycle.
