Abstract: In this paper, we present a novel approach to car following. Generally, car following systems use active sensors or a stereoscopic system for 3D-car localisation, but other solutions are possible. In this paper, we present an approach that designates the license plate as an inherent car feature that can be tracked, thus allowing the car following system to provide relative car localisation in real time.
