Abstract: This paper begins with a survey of current ethical issues in genetic engineering. It then proposes a principle by which the debates on genetic engineering might be guided. The trouble with these debates is that they get stuck on the slippery slope argument, knowing that slippery slope reasoning bodes ill, but unwilling to outline a general ethical principle.

Keywords: ethics; genetic engineering; ||slippery slope|| reasoning; Plato.
