Abstract: Planetary gear trains (PGT) have been widely used in many industries due to their unique advantages over parallel shaft gear trains. With increased demand for high speed and low vibration and low noise machinery, dynamic analysis of PGT has gained importance. In this paper, the progress in dynamics of PGT made in the past two decades is reviewed. Discussion of the mathematical models used in dynamic investigation is presented first, followed by the solution methods. The discussion is organised into several distinct subtitles, including dynamic model, free vibration, forced vibration, load sharing, mesh phasing, and parametric stability, which covers the main aspects of PGT dynamics.

Keywords: planetary gear trains; PGT dynamics; lumped mass model; LMM; finite element method; FEM; dynamic modelling; free vibration; forced vibration; load sharing; mesh phasing; parametric stability; chaos.
