Abstract: Highway traffic is a major source of air pollutants, and air pollution near road tunnel portals can become a serious problem. We have carried out a five-year project to develop an air quality simulation model that can be applied to a wide range of tunnel types located in complex terrain. This is a kind of three-dimensional numerical model. The jet stream from a tunnel portal is also modelled, and combined with the ambient wind field model. In order to evaluate the proposed model, the calculated concentrations were compared with the air tracer experimental data and good conformity was obtained.

Keywords: air quality model; complex terrain; diffusion; numerical model; tunnel portal.
