Abstract: The result of a formal strategic planning process is a strategic plan document. This research collected strategic information systems/information technology plan documents in Norway. Based on content analysis of the documents, the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) in strategic planning was identified. The CIO was often project leader for the planning process, and CIOs were authors of 71% of the plan documents. It is interesting to note that the CIO role was described in the majority of manufacturing firm plans and in the minority of public administration plans. None of the service firm plans had contents on the CIO role.

Keywords: strategic information systems plans; chief information officers; content analysis; role descriptions; plan authorship.
