Abstract: This paper compares the environmental and health impacts of generating electricity by both nuclear and coal chains. The comparison shows that the impact on the environment and on human health and the greenhouse gas emission factor from nuclear electricity generation is 1-2 orders of magnitude compared with using coal to generate electricity. The coal chain has become one of the major sources of environmental pollution. While paying attention to raising coal burning conversion efficiency and intensifying clean coal study efforts, accelerating nuclear energy development is one of the primary ways to solve the problem of environmental pollution in China.

Keywords: environmental assessment; energy source; comparison of risk.
