Abstract: The monitoring and reporting of program performance variables provide critical input to the function of project risk identification. Conventionally, a series of simple metrics have been used to track cost and schedule status. Personal judgement, intuition, and experience are then applied by project managers and analysts in order to interpret the metrics. Larger and more complicated projects generate massive volumes of reports, in order to track the detailed tasks. An automated means of analysis is necessary to contend with this surfeit of data. Risks may then be identified as early as possible so that appropriate abatement plans may be instituted. This paper describes the application of expert system technology to identify project risks for the International Space Station programme.
