Abstract: For the investigation of side injection systems used in large-bore, two-stroke diesel engines, a new phenomenological modelling approach is presented which applies empirical correlations based on a similar method presented by Hiroyasu et al. for diesel engines with central injection. Results of the new phenomenological modelling are compared with computations of a CFD method making a single-phase assumption for the spray physics. Comparisons of predictions with the measurements of other authors show that fairly useful results can be obtained by the modelling approaches employed.
