Abstract: In the field of power plant technology, a variety of applications exist to employ CFD as a fast tool to perform studies. Although the mathematical modelling of complex physics like combustion or two-phase flows in a rather extensive geometry are computationally demanding, the progress of the hardware technology makes it possible to tackle such applications on RISC based workstations. The progress of software development allows a higher flexibility in the discretisation of computational domains with the use of unstructured or hybrid grids, which in turn allows individual grid node densities. In this paper, some selected examples for CFD are presented. These studies comprise the investigations on fluid flow in coal mills / coal classifiers, as well as co-combustion of two gaseous fuels in a furnace.

Keywords: CFD; power plant; coal mills; furnace simulation.
