Abstract: A model of inter-task communication in a business process (BP) is described and investigated in simulation experiments. It is assumed that BP consists of a set of dynamic and communicating tasks that, for a given project instantiation, try to implement the project under some parameters. The developed model includes not only tasks of the project, but also components that generate requests for projects, analyse reports from involved tasks and collect the statistics for each project. The model is designed in terms of a new class of extended Petri nets. This class is implemented in the simulation tool WINSIM. With this tool, a number of performance metrics are evaluated. Being a generic model, it can be used as a base for the development of more specific models of BPs. It can serve also as a detailed example of the application of extended Petri nets to investigation of complex processes.
